Standing Up for Hoosier Teachers

Tomorrow SB 251 will be heard in the House Committee on Employment, Labor and Pensions. This bill creates unnecessary obstacles for Hoosier educators who want to join a union. The bill unfairly targets teachers who pay their union dues through payroll deduction. Payroll deduction is a routine practice that has been available to employees for decades to pay for all sorts of things, like health insurance payments and charitable donations.

SB 251 is an unwarranted government intrusion into teachers’ paycheck decisions.

This is a sneaky bill written by anti-worker special interests who want to make it harder for teachers to join unions.

Teachers are counting on you to reach out to the House Committee and tell them to vote no.

Our legislators should focus on addressing the real problems Hoosier educators face, like safe classrooms. Instead, they want to silence teachers by making it harder for them to have a collective voice. Our teachers deserve better.

Kroger workers eligible for additional compensation

Grocery and food workers have been on the frontlines throughout the COVID-19 crisis. We won’t stop fighting for the health and safety resources you need. In addition to everyday health and safety like mask wearing, social distancing, and frequent handwashing, Kroger workers have the option to receive the COVID-19 vaccine (when eligible to do so).

Kroger workers who receive the necessary doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will receive a one-time payment of $100. To get this payment, you must present the vaccination record after completing the appropriate number of doses to receive the payment.

As of now, the payment will be provided to those who receive their final dose before the end of the first quarter of fiscal year 2021. This timeframe may be extended based on vaccine availability and roll out progress.

Both the union and the company are continuing to advocate for Kroger workers to be included in the earliest eligibility phase possible for the vaccine.

For questions or more information, contact your Union Rep.

Kroger workers to receive additional pay

We’ll keep fighting for the resources and job protections you need. All hourly, frontline workers active as of January 29, 2021 will receive a $100 Thank You Credit on their loyalty card. This credit is not taxable. All Kroger workers active as of January 29, 2021 will also receive 1,000 fuel points. Both items will be applied to your loyalty card on Feb. 11.

The $100 store credit/gift card or fuel points are not subject to payroll tax withholdings. These items are to help cover / defray personal, family or living expenses as a result of the pandemic. They will not be treated as income.

The credit does need to be used in one transaction. If a purchase is made that is less than $100, the remaining balance will be applied to future purchases until the $100 is gone. (It will appear on your receipt as “thank you credit.” The credit cannot be used for alcohol, tobacco, fuel or pharmacy purchases.)

If more than one Kroger worker lives in the household, the $100 store credit is issued for each qualifying worker. All Kroger workers who are members of the household must have their loyalty cards linked in ExpressHR for the offers to automatically load.

Kroger workers who were on Leave of Absence (LOA) as of Jan. 29 are not eligible, with the exception of those on Emergency LOA.

UFCW Wins Additional Pay for Kroger Pharmacy Techs; Continues Fight for More Pay for all Kroger Workers

UFCW members are – and have been – on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis. You’ve ensured people and families in our communities continue to have the food and supplies they need.

We won additional pay for Kroger Pharmacy Techs. But, we are going to keep pushing and fighting so that all Kroger workers have the resources you’ve earned and deserve and have what you need to stay safe at work.

Local Union leaders in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio recently sent another letter to Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen reading in part:

“As long as our members continue to risk their health and their lives, they deserve hazard pay. It should have never been taken away, and now, more than ever it must be restored…

While we agree with the need to increase the Pharmacy Technician wages during this global pandemic, we maintain our position that every single store employee is at great risk of exposure to the virus and also deserves a temporary wage increase.”
